Sieradz is one of the oldest towns in Poland. In written sources it was first time mentioned in 1136 in the bull of Pope Innocent II. Sieradz was conferred municipal rights in mid-13th century. In the centuries that followed, owing to the dynamic development of the town, it was three times appointed the place of coronation for the monarchs of Poland. It is on the town square of Sieradz where the merchants from distant Spain and Portugal traded in various goods. The town also welcomed new settlers from Scotland and the Netherlands.
Despite many difficult moments in its history, Sieradz always managed to rise - owing to the spirit of its inhabitants. The most gifted of them, with their talents and hard work, made the town famous in Poland and all over Europe. It is in the settlement on Warta that the reform advocate and leading composer of Polish Renaissance, Cyprian Bazylik, the pioneer of cosmonautics, Ary Szternfeld, as well as the world famous haidresser, Antoni "Antoine" Cierplikowski, were born.
